Long-tail cast on in knitting

Step 1: Begin with your yarn. Leave a long tail (about 4-5 times the width of your knitting project) and make a slipknot at the end.

Step 2: Hold the needle with the slipknot in your right hand and the other needle in your left hand.

Step 3: Insert the right-hand needle through the loop on the left-hand needle from left to right. It should look like the needles are crossed.

Step 4: Wrap the yarn around both needles, starting from behind and coming forward between the needles.

Step 5: Bring the yarn around the right-hand needle and back to the front, forming a loop around it.

Step 6: Carefully slide the right-hand needle down, pulling the new loop through the old one on the left-hand needle.

Step 7: Slip the old loop off the left-hand needle, but keep the new loop on the right-hand needle.

Step 8: Repeat these steps until you have the desired number of stitches on your right-hand needle for your project.

Step 9: When you've cast on all your stitches, carefully pull the long tail to tighten the stitches snugly but not too tight.

For this easiest method of casting on, you will keep a long tail of yarn while you cast on. The number of stitches you want to cast on determines the length of the yarn tail.
