Materials: You need Aran (8 wpi) /10 ply or bulky / 12 ply (7 wpi) yarn such as Cascade Yarns Ecological Wool (250g and 478 yards in one skein; 100% wool) color 8019, 65-85g or 125-160 yards
Crochet hook US H/8 (5 mm) or to obtain
gauge 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) = 14 sts x 10 rows (in hdc)
Tapestry needle, marker, pom-pom maker
Sl – slip stitch

Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Hdc – half double crochet
Sc2tog – single crochet two stitches together
Hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 stitches together

Before you start – check your gauge!
The finished hat will be about 2” (-5 cm) smaller than the head circumference;
The hat is worked bottom up.
Ch 8 for all sizes.
Band Row 1: 1 hdc in 3rd ch (counts as 1st hdc) from the hook, 1 hdc in each ch all across, turn. (7 hdc)
Band Row 2: ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc and on every following row) 1 hdc in each hdc through back loop all across working the last hdc in top ch, turn. (7 hdc)
Repeat Band Row 2 until you have 34/38/42/44/46 rows total (baby/toddler/child
size S/child size M/adult).
Next row join the last row you worked to the foundation ch: ch 1, 1 sc to each hdc. The bottom band of the hat is ready. Leave the joining sc seam inside the hat and continue working the hat body in the round in the row ends of the band.
Hat Round 1: ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), (1 hdc in first row end, 2 hdc in next row end)*repeat all across skipping the sc seam (52/58/64/67/70 hdc total)
Hat Round 2: Continue in spiral working the first hdc in top ch, 1 hdc in each hdc all around (52/58/64/67/70 hdc total)
Repeat Hat Round 2, 5/6/8/9/10 times more.
Crown Round 1: 1 hdc in next hdc, (hdc2tog, 1 hdc in next hdc)*repeat all around (35/39/43/45/47 hdc)
Crown Round 2: 1 hdc in each hdc all around
Crown Round 3: 1 hdc in next 2/0/1/0/2 hdc, (hdc2tog, 1 hdc in next hdc)*repeat all around (24/26/29/30/32 hdc)
Crown Round 4: 1 hdc in each hdc all around
Crown Round 5: (hdc2tog)*repeat all around, for Child S size work 1 hdc in last hdc (12/13/15/15/16 hdc)
Crown Round 6: 1 hdc in each hdc all around
Crown Round 7: (sc2tog)*repeat all around, work 1 sc in last hdc if left any (6/7/8/8/8 hdc).
Cut the yarn leaving a longer end, with tapestry needle pull the yarn through the outer loops of the last round, fasten. Weave in all ends. Decorate the hat with 1.5” (4 cm) pom-poms attaching them to the hat about 3-4” (7-10 cm) apart.
